Moving into new living spaces can be overwhelming, especially when it comes with starting another chapter of your life. In most dormitories, space can be limited, so sometimes, only the bare essentials must be present. Below is a list of must-have items in your new residence to help transition a foreign place into a home.
First-Aid Kit
Safety first! Being in a new environment introduces a lot of unforeseen situations. Make sure that you’ll be able to heal yourself with a custom first-aid kit. Use a small but handy bag to hold essential items such as bandages, pain relievers, and medicines for headaches, fevers, and colds. Keep building your kit over time, stocking up as you see fit. Hopefully, you won’t need the items as often, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Foam Mattress
Often, dormitories come with beds that have standard mattresses. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep by bringing your foam mattress. Even a mattress topper or a thick comforter is enough to help make your dorm bed more comfortable and relaxing. Since sleep is a top priority for students, a good foam mattress is a definite must-have item in any new dormitory.
Storage Racks or Containers
Let’s face it – your room will probably be on the small side, which means having to budget overall space. Maximize the available area of your room by using moveable storage containers. These can be rolling carts with multiple levels of racks and trays, which can be used to hold anything from jewelry to toiletries. A wheeled plastic container that can fit under your bed would also be a good alternative for storing bags, shoes, and other off-season items. It would be best to use dividers inside the container as well for organization purposes. You can also buy wall hooks for items like belts, bags, and keys.
Mini-vacuum
If your room is carpeted or has areas which are hard to reach, it may be a good idea to invest in a mini-vacuum. Spilling food or drinks is likely to happen inside any dorm room, so having a handy vacuum cleaner will help prevent pests from infesting your place. As an alternative, bring a portable broom and dustpan to sweep up any spills or messes.
Disinfecting Wipes
Keeping your new dormitory room clean is a must! However, it can be tiring at times, especially when other responsibilities overwhelm you. During these times, disinfecting wipes are a quick and effective solution for cleaning up. You can just wipe all surfaces down – from sinks to countertops, and even your doorknobs and desks. Don’t always take the easy route, though, and still make time to do a proper cleaning of your room.
Reusable Bags and Plastic Bags
Both types of bags are beneficial when moving to a new dormitory. A reusable bag is a convenient tool when moving large, bulky, or multiple items. They can also double as storage containers for clothes or bags. Plastic bags come in handy, so make sure to store a few inside your new dormitory. These bags can be used inside wastebaskets for easier disposal of trash, and as temporary containers for fruit and other food items.
Other must-have items include your alarm clock, to make sure that you get to class on time. Do also bring a bathrobe and extra towels, since you will most likely be sharing a communal bathroom. Don’t forget your basic toiletries as well. You can also bring several personal items to decorate your new room. Keep the feeling of home by personalizing your desk walls, but make sure to check your dormitory rules first.
