A lot of people find it hard to write admission essays. Some say it’s because writing is not their forte; there are those who consider it pointless. But try as we might, it is still a part of the list of requirements that need to be submitted to your school of choice, so we have no choice but to deal with it.
We give you five tips for writing a successful admission essay.
1. Be comfortable.
Before writing your essay, make sure that you are in a comfortable position in a relaxed setting. It could be at your favorite coffee shop as you enjoy a mocha latte with a doughnut, or in your bedroom with music in the background. Comfort helps inspire the creative juices from and keep them pumping nonstop in your bloodstream.
Imagine what it would look and feel like when you get accepted. The campus, the lessons, the professors, the activities. The vibrant scholarly community and the competitive academic environment. Doing so will ignite your excitement, and it will show itself in the words that you will write.
3. Sell yourself.
Know your strengths. It could be your grades, or your friendly nature that would make it easier for you to adjust to your new school. It could be your innate thirst for knowledge and new surroundings, or hunger for new experiences. Whatever they are, make sure you mention it on your admission essay because the admission committee would want to know what it is that you have to offer, and not just what they can offer should they decide to accept you.
4. Express excitement, but not desperation.
There is a fine line between eagerness and desperation, and most of the time, people blur that boundary especially when writing admission essays. Exaggeration, overselling your qualities, and making the reader feel as if it is the end of the world if they pass you up for admission are sure ways to get you rejected.
Play on your strengths; it helps that you talk about your weak points that need improvements. This way, people in the admission panel will know that you are open to being taught.
Of course, a great admission essay content is nothing if you have so much grammatical errors, misspelled words, and so many mistakes in punctuation. It is not only the subject of the essay that matters, but also the overall form of the piece.
Whatever happens, be positive when writing the essay. It helps put you in a cheerful mood, and your natural personality will show in the essay. Good luck!
